Julio's Liquors
will be OPEN on
Easter Sunday
12Noon - 6PM

Easter and Passover are special times for family and friends.  The meals highlighting these holidays are also very special times when we often share the best that we can afford. Great care is taken to prepare the traditional (or maybe not so traditional) meals and we want to be sure that the wine is also the best for the meal.

My mother’s favorite wine was Manischewitz Red Concord Grape right out of the refrigerator. A wine expert she wasn’t and that just left more BV Georges de Latour for my dad, brothers and me.  Now with the great selection of kosher wines available to us these days you don’t have to settle for just the traditional sweet concord wines with your Passover Seder. The wines from Israel continue to improve and each wine producing country in the world is offering us wines that are Kosher for Passover ranging from under $10 to over $100 per bottle.

Each culture has different menu items for these holidays, and at Julio’s Liquors the-Angel/ we try to have a bit of something for everyone. Over the last few weeks I have been offering a large array of wines from affordable roses to $200 Cabernets at special pricing to help you show your best for your friends and family.  I thank all that have made or are going to make purchases for your holiday from – Peace/Shalom -TK

Cardinale 2006 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Special Easter Feature Price $150.00 - BUY IT

Release price $200.00

Wine Enthusiast rated 100 points

“Tasted in a flight of great and famous Napa wines, this Cardinale stood at the head of the pack. Starts with a very fine nose of cedar, cassis, ripe blackberries and violets, then turns dramatic and refined in the mouth. Shows vast depth and length, with the finish a full minute of sweet fruits and spices. Marvelous tannins, so plush and elegant, so powerful yet refined. The grapes hail from Mt. Veeder, Howell Mountain, Stags Leap and Oakville, and the blend contains 14% Merlot. As good as it is now, it will improve for at least eight years.”
Joseph Phelps “Insignia” 2008 Napa Valley Estate Red

Special Easter Feature Price $140.00 - BUY IT

Release price $200.00

The Wine Advocate rated 97 points

“The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Insignia is a towering, statuesque wine bursting with blackberry jam, tar, spices, leather and licorice. It shows fabulous depth and richness backed up by serious, imposing tannins that suggest it has a long life. Ideally, the 2008 should be purchased by those who can be patient; it is not a wine for those seeking immediate gratification. The blend is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Malbec.”

Justin Vineyards & Winery “Tim’s Blend” 2008 Paso Robles Syrah

Special Easter Feature Price $22.00 - BUY IT

Release price $30.00

100% Syrah 100% French Oak Barrel Aged 100% Unfined/Unfiltered
55% Derby Vineyard 35% Halter Ranch 10% Zimmerman Vineyard

I blended this wine on Monday January 11, 2010 out of 3 of the 5 components offered to me by head Justin’s winemaker Kevin Sass.  I must thank Justin & Deborah Baldwin for an incredible opportunity, and thank you Kevin Sass for finishing my blend so perfectly. TK

Curtis 2008 Santa Barbara County Mourvedre

Special Easter Feature Price $14.00 - BUY IT

Release price $20.00

75% Vogelsang Vineyard Mourvedre 15% Crossroads Vineyard Grenache, 7% Kingsley Vineyard Syrah 3% Curtis Estate Mourvedre all aged in French Oak.

I made this wine on Friday January 8, 2010 with the help of Assistant winemaker Ernst Storm who precisely measured all of my prospective blends. It took us about 2 hours to narrow down the correct percentages for the style of wine which I was trying to create, and I am extremely proud of the final product.  A special thanks to Chuck Carlson for inviting me out to play around at the winery and for so perfectly finishing my wine.  TK

Tortoise Creek Wines 2010 Pays d’Herault “Vielles Vignes” Carignan

Special Easter Feature Price $8.00 - BUY IT

Release price $13.00

A Julio’s exclusive, this beautiful, lighter style red wine is brought to us by my good friend Mel Master. Made from one of Languedoc’s traditional varietals, all of the grapes for this wine came from vines over 40 years old.  Stylistically it may resemble a lighter Pinot Noir with soft edges and beautiful herbs d’Provence nuances surrounding the black cherry fruit flavors.  Tortoise Creek “Vielles Vignes” Carignan is an excellent choice for social gatherings or lighter fare.  TK

Chateau de Treviac 2009 Corbieres Rouge

Special Easter Feature Price $9.00 - BUY IT

Release price $14.00

2009 is the third vintage that we have carried of this “Julio’s Exclusive” which is 60% Syrah & 40% Grenache made by Arnauld Sie at Chateau de Treviac just outside of the town of Corbieres in Languedoc of Southern France.  With the vineyards proximity to the Mediterranean Sea and it cooling influences the wine tends to be a bit lighter and drier than similar blends from the Rhone Valley allowing it to match with a greater variety of foods, but it really shines with grilled steaks or chops.  TK

Hitching Post 2007 Santa Barbara County Merlot

Special Easter Feature Price $15.00 - BUY IT

Release price $30.00

Last Tuesday at Arturo’s spring wine dinner we served the Hitching Post 2007 Merlot with rack of lamb and Wow, what a perfect match! This wine saw 24 months on oak and is just now starting to come into its own.  If you’d like to try a Pomerol style Merlot made in California then grab these now.  In fact grab a case because they will continue to get better over the next 4 years.  TK

“Another big, earthy, tannic, Medoc-styled wine is the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Bear Point. There are only 231 cases of this cuvee, which offers abundant amounts of black currant, cedar, spice box, and earth notes in a full-bodied, tannic style. Give it 5-8 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 20 years.”

“A dramatic wine, authoritative in tannins, bone dry and noble. Withholds its best under a cloak of astringency, but already shows its mountain terroir in the complexity of its structure and deep, intense blackberry, currant, blueberry and dried herb flavors. Should develop bottle complexities for at least a decade and probably longer.”

Mt. Brave 2008 Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon
Buy it Now!

2008 is only the 2nd vintage for Mt. Brave which is being spearheaded by winemaker Christopher Carpenter of Cardinale, La Jota, Lokoya and now Mt. Brave.  It is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from selected plots of the 100 planted acres scattered about Mt Veeder.  The vineyards of Mt. Brave range from 1400 to 1800 ft elevation and have been replanted during the period 1995 to 2007.  I was amazed by the wines classic nose, the explosive fruit flavors and the very soft, silky tannins.  The wine shined even better when it was paired with Del Frisco’s perfectly prepared rare filet mignon.  TK

“A big, vital, dramatic wine, one of the finest Cab Francs of the vintage. Dazzles with blackberry, black cherry, mocha and spice flavors, wrapped into thick but finely ground tannins, and enriched with smoky oak. Beautiful now and for the next 4–5 years.”

“The 2008 Chardonnay Lower Rim is another compelling effort displaying enormous flesh, richness, succulence, minerality, and acidity. Notes of steely nectarines, bright oranges, lemon zest, butter cookies, and nutmeg emerge from this serious Chardonnay.”

“Every bit as good is the 2008 Chardonnay Broken Road. Abundant gravelly/mineral-like notes intermixed with tropical fruit, oranges, and other stone fruits as well as quince and mango emerge from this elegant, crisp offering. It may be slightly less full-bodied than the Red Point, but that’s splitting hairs at this level of quality.”

Poggio al Tesoro “Sondraia”
2007 Bolgheri

Wine Spectator rated 93 points
Wine Advocate rated 92 points

“The 2007 Sondraia reveals tons of Bolgheri character in its warm, sunny fruit. Espresso, blackberries and French oak meld together in a radiant, expressive red that caresses the palate with layers of ample fruit. This is a gorgeous effort from Poggio al Tesoro and a very classic, representative red from Maremma. Sondraia is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.”

Orma 2007 Toscana Rosso $89.99

The Wine Advocated rated 94 points

“The 2007 Orma is warm and open on the nose, as hints of grilled herbs, espresso, blackberry jam, mocha and spices emerge from the glass. All of those notes resonate on the palate, where the rich, expansive fruit comes to life in a gorgeous display of Maremma. Round and caressing through to the finish, the 2007 Orma is an utterly convincing, beautifully articulated wine. Naturally at this stage it is rather bold and the oak remains present, but time will tame some of the wine’s more exuberant qualities. This is by far the finest vintage of Orma I have ever tasted. Orma is 40% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon.”

WIne of the Month Club (choose 3, 6, 9 or 12 months)

It's hard not to think of Napa Valley when thinking of California wines. The region is, after all, the one that brought world recognition to California wine making. The area was settled by a few choice wine families in the 1960's who bet that the wines of the area would grow and flourish. They were right. The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard lands were scooped up and vines were planted throughout the county. A number of wineries emerged, from large conglomerates to small boutiques to cult classics.
